Our Community

Responsible Travel

Travelling responsibly is at the heart of everything we do and every decision we make. We believe that travel should be a force for good and by uniting with our employees, partners and guests, we can make a positive impact in the local communities where we operate.

Our Social Responsibility

Nkuringo Lodges and our Safari Operations are involved in various social and environmental protection programs that affect our businesses and are especially engaged in raising ecological awareness as part of the holiday safari experience by passing on this information to their guests who stay or travel with us in Africa.

While the need to go the proverbial extra mile is central to Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge's philosophy—‘In Harmony With Nature’—our responsible travel wish is that our guests depart emotionally rich, more informed and ecologically aware than when they arrived and more appreciative of the world on their return home, is of paramount importance.

In the process, our customers are exposed to not only the continent’s plethora of treasures and experiences, but also the challenges that face our planet and humanity.

Nkuringo staff are aware of how all the elements of life interact, and that tourism and way we do business has an impact that can be positive or negative on the places we visit. We believe in proactively educating one another and travellers about these cultural and environmental issues and ensuring responsible behaviour in everyday life.

As individuals and a company we believe in contributing to broader societal goals and look beyond simply making a profit. We understand, and are concerned about, our human impact on the planet which is fostering rapid climate change resulting from massive over-consumption and depletion of resources.

We actively support those associates and affiliates who are engaged in responsible planning and management of our environment and natural resources to redress damage and ensure sustainability

Our responsible travel policy also endorses the principals of Fair Trade in Tourism, which is about ensuring that the people, whose land, natural resources, labour, knowledge and culture are used for tourism activities, actually benefit from tourism.

Nkuringo Bwindi
Youth Organization

Sensitizing and empowering children and youth through conservation, education, sports, health and development skill.

Health Center

Located in Kikomo area, Nkuringo Health Center promotes good health and well-being among the communities and families of Nkuringo people through traveller donations of medicine, equipment, supplies and an occasional hand from a travel doctor.

Nkuringo Vocational School

Dedicated to uplifting our community by giving special support and attention to those who need it most – our children, through vocational and general life skills workshops, access to good education like sponsorship and scholastic supplies.

Sewing Machine Project

Empowering the women of Nkuringo with sewing skills and knowledge to uplift their self-confidence and wealth. Nkuringo promotes their products through our gifts shop at the lodge and encourages travellers to donate and volunteer with the group through Nkuringo cultural center.

Carbon Footprint

Reforestation is a cornerstone for Nkuringo Safaris sustainability efforts. We operate a Carbon Neutral lodge in Bwindi NP and work through the Uganda Carbon Bureau to offset our carbon footprint. The indigenous tree planting initiative is an opportunity for guests to leave a lasting memory at our lodges. We are conscious of the environment and action towards litter collection, waste management, water conservation, recycling and re-use of resources.

Pack For a Purpose

If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and take supplies for the projects we support in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families.

Walking Safari Guides

Through our fair-trade policy, we help sponsor walking safari guides with guiding skills training courses and extend our support to the guide’s children in our Nkuringo Junior Stars Program with a primary focus on the girl-child staying in school while their parent earns a comfortable living.

Nkuringo Cultural Center

Promoting conservation and cultural education of the archaic indigenous Batwa cultures. The center exhibits activities through cultural performances, habitat conservation, skill development, education and forest and community tour experiences. Nkuringo is proud to promote and sell the center’s products & services to our travellers.

Our community responsibility policy aims at promoting these community-based projects and sustainable businesses by empowering lives of children, women and their families. Many of the products from these initiatives have immensely reduced our carbon footprint and at the same time, financially reduced our cost of doing business with getting fresh produce from the community. We are in line with our practice to assist local communities in and around Nkuringo region.

We foresee some of responsible travel initiatives contributing to the broader economy through reduction in the rural-urban migration, community empowerment, healthy and an educated population that we would like to see others in the industry also emulate.
